Patrick joins our Volunteer Team!

We are launching our new early education programme this year for our 3-4 year old beneficiaries. Patrick from Quebec, Canada joined out team of volunteers last week and will no doubt have a great time with the kids.

Activities in our Creche Garden Network have begun. Volunteers are already sweating in the African sun! Check out our harvest from our crèche gardens. Many little mouths to feed as we start off our new year. And yes…those are ‘’baby’’ marrows! Of course all organic.

Permie Facilitators are requested to train in North West Province.

In partnership with Project Literacy and Thabiso Skills Center, Jerminah facilitated a 6 Day Permaculture Design course for 16 ABET Learners. Our Facilitators are now out the nest and Ekukhanyeni is now capacitated to conduct training in all areas of the country. Well Done guys!

Annual Christmas celebrations

Sponsors and Friends of Ekukhanyeni teamed up in groups on 25 November 2011, to go to our 15 crèches to hand out all the Xmas delights and to spend one-on-one time with the Little Ones. The children even decorated their crèches with their own artwork that they created in anticipation for this day. Thanks so much to all those very special people who contributed to this day!

Action Kids Concert 2011

We celebrated our Grade R Stars at the annual Action Kids Concert on 11 November 2011 This year was the best attended since we started with Action Kids in 2007! This year has been such a success for us and we now look to expand our early education interventions in 2012 to include the 3-4 year olds.

Crèche Upgrades are going well

The newly incorporated crèches are undergoing a major transformation, inside and out, and bright beacons of love are emerging in the informal settlement of Lawley – a place of refuge, safety and learning for many Little Ones.

Action Kids Stars

Our educational programme, Action Kids, is building many stars for the future with our monthly achiever rewards for the children and care-givers and much learning is taking place with our monthly themes and activities.

2011 Winter Drive

Thanks to many, 40 oil heaters, 652 blankets, hand-made woollens, clothes and food were handed out to our beneficiary crèches and children. One of our community members made the majority of the blankets for us, so they are extra special!

We have expanded our services in 2011 to reach another 7 crèches in Lawley Ext 2 – same informal settlement as our other 8 beneficiary crèches. Upgrades to crèches are underway. Educational Programme Underway for 2011

We have incorporated 270 children aged 5-6 years into our Action Kids educational programme this year and is underway at all of our 15 beneficiary crèches. To date we have educated 1005 children since 2007, preparing them for their primary education.

Annual Action Kids Concert – 12 November 2010

We shared a wonderful morning with 150 of our pre-school aged beneficiary kids as they entertained us and touched our hearts with their unique performances and gorgeous smiles. We also got to check out all their beautiful creations throughout the year with their cut and paste activities.

2010 Crèche Gardens

Our 2010 crèche garden development has gone well and gardens are looking good for summer! Vegetables and culinary herbs harvested from the gardens are given to the children to add to their daily nutritional intake.

Arbor Day – 3 September 2010

Arbour day was celebrated at Mercedes-Benz South Africa’s offices. Ekukhanyeni’s permaculture tutors facilitated the planting of six indigenous trees…the permie way of course…and explained the medicinal values of each.

Climb Killi Campaign – August 2010

This amazing group of individuals, led by Gary and African Encounters climbed Mount Killi to raise funds to upgrade our beneficiary crèches. They summited on 25 August. Thanks guys – you are the best! Looking forward to getting down to do some fun stuff for our little crew!

Young English Lads raise £2,741.50 for Ekukhanyeni!

A group of young cricketers from the Bedford Preparatory School in the UK came up with a wonderfully innovative way to raise funds for our Child Development Programme! A monetary amount per run scored and wicket taken was devised and an amazing £2,741.50 was raised! Our little crew thank you!

Our Very Own Soccer Champions

Well done to Cabukani crèche – the winner of our Soccer Corner competition in June. The children at all 8 beneficiary crèches taken up in our Action Kids educational programme were tasked to create a soccer corner leading up to the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Flags were flown and Vuvuzelas blown!

Cold Hands, Warm Heart Drive May 2010

We had originally set out to gift 450 of our beneficiary children in Lawley Ext 2 with a set of gloves, socks, scarf and hat. The response was so overwhelming that we received enough sponsorship to reach 1000 Little Ones, taken up in crèches which we haven’t yet been able to support. Thank you to All!

Development of Rabeh Creche Garden – 2-3 May 2010

A Permaculture Garden was designed and developed at Rabeh Creche, bringing our crèche garden network of gardens to 7. This garden will provide vegetable, herb and medicinal plant produce to add to the children’s daily diets and make healthier lifestyle choices available to the adult garden beneficiaries.

Taking permaculture on the Road Initiative

We launched this initiative at Mercedes-Benz South Africa at the company’s Star Talk on 4 May 2010 – aimed at developing presentation skills of our very own community-based tutors, raising awareness of Permaculture and our efforts to address Food Security issues. Action Kids Monthly Achiever for April 2010

Each month our educational component of the Early Childhood Development programme recognises monthly achievers. They were Nhlanhla Nzuza for “Always Doing his Best” and Daphney Mphulenyane for “Always Works Hard in Class”

10 Day Permaculture Training Intensives

Our 10 day training sessions will commence again on March 8 2010. These sessions have been initiated to assist local iNGO’s CBO’s, care-workers and community project members with tackling food security challenges – focusing on skills in Urban Permaculture design and Plant Based health care and Functional Nutrition. Training is conducted by four of our community based Champions who have been mentored to tutor and facilitate workshops in the vernacular languages of Sotho and Zulu.

IIR staff members spent their community day at the 8 partnered crèches. The day was spent doing educational and fun activities and when nap time rolled in for the kids, IIR staff members were more than ready to join them!

On 29 January 2010, the partnership launch was celebrated in the community of Lawley with local government representatives and community members. The celebrations marked a 4 year partnership with Ekukhanyeni. Thank you Mercedes-Benz! Ekukhanyeni’s Permaculture project was supported by the Deputy President and ways to replicate our educational model in other vulnerable areas is being investigated.
